SV6723 Stanley Steam CarThis is one of only 3 cars in the country, only one of 31 left worldwide. It has a 14" boiler that contains 270 vertical tubes. It is heated by a burner mounted underneath which is fuelled by vaporised petrol at 80 psi being mixed in twin venture. The running pressure of the boiler is 400 psi. The superheated steam is then fed to a rear mounted horizontal twin cylinder engine fixed directly onto the rear differential. There are no gears but it does have a reverse system. The car is quite capable of 30-40mph steady steaming. Image taken by Helen Pursey at Buckfastleigh on 13/09/2009
