1919 Slaby-Beringer8/9/2009 I went to the Launceston Steam Railway and discovered that they have a small but very interesting transport museum.
This exhibit is a cracker. It is a 1919 Slaby-Beringer electric car. About 2000 were made in Berlin and only 4 are known to survive.
Most were sold to Japan but a few came to London and were sold through Gamages.
They would easily outperform a Sinclair C5 with a top speed of 22mph.
It runs on a 24 volt lead acid accumulator using a shunt wound motor. Later models were fitted with a DKW two-stroke petrol engine.
By the way you steer it with a tiller, wow...
It is owned by Colin Wykes of Tregadillick who rebuilt it.
